Lindsay is out of surgery. She is in very critical condition and has lost a significant amount of blood. They were able to do the artery bypass but did not do anything additional with the mitral valve. The "wow" in this would be if the heart would regain its function. Dr. Mayer and his team did an amazing job and we need to pray for strength for them as well as the rest of the team that ministered to Lindsay.
It will be another hour or so until the kids will get to see her. PLEASE PRAY THAT THE LORD WILL STOP THE BLEEDING to the amazement of the doctors. They have closed the chest to hopefully help deal with the infection. It has been a very long day for everyone. Please pray for the kids as they process the news which is obviously not what we were all hoping for at the moment. God is still in control and HE can still WOW us all.

Tuesday Evening Update

Tuesday Afternoon Update
Lindsay is now in surgery! Laura and Jon had us all come in Lindsay's cubicle to pray with over her. It was a very teary time, especially hearing Laura confidently and victoriously intercede on behalf of her daughter.Please pray for the doctors and nurses who will be attending to her during the surgery. We are trusting the Lord for a miracle! Three verses that keep coming to us from all over the world are Philippians 4:6-7, Deut. 31:8 and Romans 15:13.

Tuesday morning update
Well we all had the surprise of our life when Brian Bitler, Julie and Ethan walked in the waiting room! We were all so happy to see them, and I know that it was a shot in the arm for Laura.
Dr. Mayer had them raise her bed with several more mattresses to help with getting the fluid levels under control. We will have to take a picture as her nurse, Moira, said she looks like the "princess and the pea." Already it has been helpful in draining fluid.

Tuesday Morning Update
Good morning. Today is the day of Lindsay's surgery. We don't have a definite time yet, but believe it will be some time after 12:00 noon. As soon as we have a definite time, we will post it on the blog.
Please be praying for the team of doctors and nurses who will be ministering to her in the OR. Pray for Dr. Mayer who is the head surgeon.
Two things that blessed me last night:
1. I finally had the privilege of meeting the nurse who saved Lindsay's life. We refer to her as our "angel of mercy." We thought you would be blessed, too, by meeting Julia. Thanks, Julia! We love you.
2. I was also so moved last night to be in Lindsay's room while Laura prayed over her before we left. It was a very emotional time for me, and I was so thankful to witness the strength that God is giving our kids as they walk through this difficult time. Jon and Laura, we are so proud of you.

Monday Afternoon Update
Here is the latest update on Lindsay:
Tomorrow afternoon they are scheduling open heart surgery. Dr. Myer is going to go back in a see if he can further repair the mitral valve or have to replace it. He will also try and do a bypass to hopefully get better blood flow to the heart. The procedure will be 5-6 hours in length and is obviously very risky. Of all the options available, this seems to be the most viable, though he repeatedly said that it is very, very risky.
The infection is still an issue and that is a cause for concern. They are planning to remove the ECMO cannulaes from the heart to either the neck or through the groin. This will enable the chest to have time to heal and rest.
I will let you know the exact time so you can be praying. Pray for the surgical team as they prepare and work through the different scenarios. The seriousness of the situation and the potential outcomes are obviously making it very stressful for Laura and Jon. Thanks for standing with us in prayer.

Monday morning update
Lindsay had a good night and her EKG was better. The plan at the moment is to do another "clean and rinse" this morning and to insert a vent into the heart to help with her pressures. They are getting together the "revascularization" team (hope Donna Bitler is impressed!) to decide when/if they will do the bypass surgery. I will put more pictures on later today for you.

Sunday evening update
Tonite's report was that the surgeon was pleased with Lindsay's numbers and that she was resting very comfortably. We have not receieved any definitive word about the surgery tomorrow, so we will let you know as soon as we get word.The kids took us to Bertucci's for dinner tonight with my brother and sister-in-law and Warren and Phyllis. It was a nice celebration of our 34th anniversary, but we really missed Lindsay Bear and wished she could have been there.

The surgery would be 5-6 hours barring no complications. This does not rule out the possibility of her being able to have the Berlin heart or the transplant, but if it works, could possibly help with her heart.
Shea, the nurse caring for Lindsay today, is on the transplant team, and gave us some good information. Pray for wisdom for the team.
Another baby passed away this afternoon. We were able to get a copy of Marilyn Heavilin's book, ROSES IN DECEMBER into their hands. Pray the Lord will use Marilyn's story to be an encouragement. Last night the mood was very somber back in Lindsay's room. She is still fighting the infection in her chest and they were having trouble with fluid build up both in her body and in the left side of the heart. Part of the challenge is that they were removing fluids through ECMO which meant her kidneys were not doing as much of the work. They were trying to increase her blood pressure to jump start her kidneys. They talked about the possibility of going in last night to but in a vent to drain the fluid in the heart.
Can I ask you to join us in praying today that the Lord will give us some encouragement? Please pray for on-going strength for Laura and Jon. We are now coming up to beginning the 4th week. Laura and Jan have not left the hospital since the day of surgery.

Saturday Afternoon Update
Greetings from Children's Hospital Boston. My brother, George, and sister-in-law, Joan, planned a trip up here to see Lindsay, so Zach and I hitched a ride which surprised Jan since tomorrow is our 34th wedding anniversary.
They did another clean and rinse this morning and there is still an infection in the chest. The infection has ruled out using the Berlin heart for the moment, so there is a good possibility that on Monday they may attempt to do the bypass surgery.
It was hard for me to see Lindsay Bear with so many tubes and medications, and to finally see what the ECMO was all about. She has wonderful care here.
I had the opportunity to eaves drop on a conversation that the ECMO technician
(Julie) had with Laura. I was moved to tears to hear the nurse say how she couldn't believe how well Laura and Jon were handling this situation. Laura gave a strong, clear testimony of how God is sustaining them and told her of the thousands of saints praying for Lindsay.
I am guess my prayer request for everyone today is that we would see God so something so extraordinary that the nurses and doctors will be WOWED to pieces!

Friday Afternoon Update
Sorry for the lack of information. Up until about an hour ago, things were quiet. I can't really go into a lot of detail at the moment because we are all trying to sort out all that is happening.
We are asking our prayer partners to mobilize to pray very specifically that God will give HIS wisdom to the doctors. They are at a point of really not knowing what the next step should be. They have discussed various options, but they are really at the place where they don't know what would be best.
From what I can determine, the best case scenario is still for God to provide a heart for Lindsay. I did find out that she can be on the ECMO for up to six weeks, so we are not actually at crunch time, but half way there.
There is still the need to get rid of more fluids which they think they can do with ECMO, an issue with the lung, and getting her sedated enough to relax.
So please pray specifically that the team will be willing to listen to HIS voice. Thanks. Be assured that as soon as I know something, even in the middle of the night, I will post information to keep you up to date.

Good morning. Lindsay had a good night. The blood infection is under control and we are waiting to hear back on the other cultures.
She is becoming more accustomed to the parayltic drugs, so she has become a little more "wiggly" and so they are needing to give her more meds to keep her quiet.
I guess we are at the place where "no news is good news."
There is a big meeting on Monday with the entire team to try and get answers to the next step questions.
Thank you again for praying, and writing on the blog. For the MANY of you who have not yet left a note -- this is a HUGE encouragement to Laura and Jon. Someone this morning said, "With all the people writing, I don't want to be a pest." Pests right now are a lifeline of encouragement. So pester away!!!

Thursday Eveninig Update
"The eyes of all look expectantly to You." Psalm 145:15
That was the first verse I read this morning, and how our great God has been at work as we corporately as a family and the family of God have looked to HIM.
Late this afternoon Laura was given a beeper to keep with her at all times which would notify them that the team received word about a heart.
There was a wee bit of confusion since the report this morning seemed to indicate that we were not at that point.
The team felt that since she had improved (infection) that she should be put back on the priority list in the event this is a viable option.
So how do we pray? Our prayer is that God would make it very CLEAR and PLAIN about the next step. We are praying that if HE is going to heal Lindsay through the heart transplant, that the miracle will be a heart as soon as possbible. However, if God wants to heal the her present heart, we are praying that He would hold off on a heart.
We don't presume to know HIS will, so pray that God will speak to the hearts and minds of the team of doctors and nurses providing her care.
Laura went back to check on her before going to dinner and her nurse said that Lindsay was wiggling around. She told Lindsay that if she could hear her, to open her eyes and she did! Now they have had to increase her medications to keep her sedated, but it is very apparent that Lindsay is in the fight! Praise the Lord.

Thursday Noon Update

This morning Lindsay had her procedure which included the rinse and exploration of the mitral valve and some additional tests.
Dr. Emani reported that the mitral valve is now mild-to-moderate, which is a big improvement from SEVERE! He then shared that he is AMAZED at the way her heart is beginning to show signs of getting stronger!!!
There is a concern about the left lung, so pray about that as well as praying for the eradication of the infection. His theory now is that the infection could have caused the cardiac arrest.
Right now he is suggesting that they begin to back done the ECMO to see how much her heart can do. If this continues to improve, his recommendation is that they allow her to regain strength, and move towards doing the coronary bypass down the road and not even consider the Berlin Heart or transplant.
Laura and Jan said he kept using the word AMAZED and said we moved from the valley to the mountain. He was cautious to say we could be back in the valley in an hour, but he was encouraged.
Laura shared with him that her prayer has been that if God was going to heal Lindsay, that it would be to the AMAZEMENT of the the doctors and that they would be blown away. Jan shared that there are 1000's of people praying for Lindsay, but that we were asking everyone to pray for the doctors and nurses too! They said at that point he was very teary-eyed!

From my limited understanding of Jon and Laura's comment about Lindsay's being a "dire" situation, she cannot be on the ECMO machine for an indefinite period of time. Right now the team is thinking through every possible scenario because the clock is ticking.
The Berlin heart cannot become functional until the infection is completely gone. Until the infection is gone she is on the inactive list for a heart transplant. There was some talk about the remote possibility of doing some type of "bypass" surgery, which would obviously be better than a transplant.
This morning as I began my quiet time, I was crying out to the Lord for something fresh and new from His Word. These were the verses that God gave to me:

The Lord is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for Him. It will be said in that day: 'Behold, this is our God; we have waited for Him, and He will save us. This is the Lord; we have waited for Him; we will rejoice and be glad in His salvation. If we hope for what we do not see, then we eagerly wait for it with perseverance." From Boston.........
Tanner checking out Lindsay's Berlin heart, which arrived this morning courtesy of British Airways. Now we need Lindsay's infections to clear up. The doctor called her situation "dire" tonight, so we covet your prayers. We thank you all for the support you have all been this far and wil continue to be.

Wedneday Noon Update
We continue to see progress. They are going to open her chest again and do a "clean and rinse" procedure and make sure there is no spread of infection. They seem to be getting control of the infection and there is no sign of any new infection.
The Berlin Heart as arrived and if they can get rid of the infection, they could hook that up as early as this weekend. Once the infection is under control, she will be placed back on the active list for a heart.
